Untangling Nature’s Web: Pollination and the Path to a Sustainable Future
About This Video
In this Tech Vision Talk, Marilia Gaiarsa focuses on interactions between plants and their pollinators. She shows how pollinators are both a major aspect of the biodiversity in nature as well as the source of one of the most economically valuable ecosystem services. Marilia shares that by studying their interactions and the networks they form, it allows us to more effectively conserve and restore individual species within complex ecological communities, as well as broadens the understanding of the intricate relationships within ecological networks that can pave the way toward a sustainable future.

Marilia Gaiarsa is an Assistant Professor in the Life and Environmental Sciences at UC Merced. Her research focuses on using bees as a study system to understand the role species interactions play in the maintenance and persistence of biodiversity and the provision of ecosystem services, such as pollination. Prior to joining UC Merced, Marilia earned her Ph.D. from the University of São Paulo in Brazil and was a UC Chancellor’s Postdoctoral Fellow at UC Riverside. She was also a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at Zurich University in Switzerland.
