Have you wondered about being able to detect buried objects? Do you think your mobile device can be used to detect these buried objects? Metal is all around us and is often not seen but buried. The detection of metal is in many places on Earth. In fact the detection of metal is connected to a variety of applications such as: to provide insight regarding land use, detection of historic artifacts, determine the presence of various devices, and more.
In our workshop, we will explore using your own mobile device as a metal detector in your local environment. During this workshop we will provide an overview of the basics of sensors, AI, and IoT which will be required for building a prototype of our application. We’ll do hands-on exercises where you will acquire data from sensors, obtain summary statistics on the acquired data, and train a human activity classifier to understand what was done while data was being collected. We will also have an engaged discussion regarding topics to be mindful of with respect to this application such as considerations regarding the collection and usage of location data. You will leave motivated and ready to use sensors, AI, and IoT in your own projects via MATLAB!

Louvere Walker-Hannon is a MathWorks Senior Application Engineer, who provides direction and recommendations on technical workflows for various applications. She has a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and a master’s degree in Geographic Information Technology with a specialization in Remote Sensing.
Consulting Application Engineer, MathWorks
Dr. Loren Shure has worked at MathWorks for over 35 years. For the first 27 of these years, Loren co-authored several MathWorks products in addition to adding core functionality to MATLAB, including major contributions to the design of the MATLAB language. She is currently part of the Application Engineering team, enabling Loren to spend more time and energy working with customers.
For more than 10 years, traveling worldwide over half of each year, Loren delivers more than 150 technical, strategic, and vision-setting presentations yearly to audiences ranging from hands-on problem solvers through high-level executives.
She graduated from MIT with a B.Sc. in physics and has a Ph.D. in marine geophysics from the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Loren writes about MATLAB on her blog, http://blogs.mathworks.com/loren/, The Art of MATLAB.
Senior Software Engineer, MathWorks
Sarah Mohamed is a Software Engineer at MathWorks working on deep learning interoperability. She develops tools that allow AI models to be exchanged and deployed among frameworks such as MATLAB, Pytorch, TensorFlow, and ONNX. In the past, she has also worked as an Application Support Engineer, where she interacted directly with customers developing deep learning applications. She obtained her M.Sc. in Computational Science and Engineering from Harvard University, and holds dual bachelor’s degrees in Computer Science and Biology from the University of Virginia. She has experience organizing and delivering hands-on workshops at the Grace Hopper Celebration, the world’s largest conference for women in computing, as well as TechTogether Boston, the largest student-led hackathon for women and nonbinary individuals in Boston.

Shruti Karulkar is the Quality Engineering Manager MATLAB Hardware at MathWorks. Shruti’s team of highly creative engineers work to design and implement cutting-edge tools to qualify MATLAB and Simulink support for hardware ranging from simple – Arduino/Raspberry Pi/iOS and Android phones – to high-end RF Signal Generators. Shruti has a long history of serving as a STEM mentor and is a STEM Ambassador for MathWorks. Shruti was a Speaker at GHC18, GHC19 and GHC20 delivering successful and popular hands-on AI workshops.
