Harnessing Data and Tech for Ocean Health and Sustainability

About This Video

In this Tech Vision Talk, Fiorenza Micheli discusses that with climate change causing upheavals in ocean ecosystems, growing demand for food from the sea, overexploitation of natural and cultural resources more powerful tools for ocean exploration, stewardship, and sustainability are urgently needed. Advances in data and technology offer unprecedented potential to expand capacity to track and understand ocean change and uses, to transform data streams into useful and usable information, and make it accessible to users and decision-makers. This potential and the urgent need are illustrated through examples on tracking ocean uses globally and blue foods.

Fiorenza Micheli is the David and Lucile Packard Professor of Marine Science at Stanford University, chair of the Oceans Department in the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, co-director of Stanford’s Center for Ocean Solutions, a senior fellow at Woods Institute for the Environment, and Professor, by courtesy, in Biology. Her research focuses on the processes shaping marine communities and coastal social-ecological systems, incorporating this understanding into marine conservation and co-designing solutions with decision-makers, and communities.
