Women in Data Science Worldwide (WiDS), a pioneering non-profit championing the advancement of women in data science, proudly announces Chisoo Lyons as its new Executive Director.
A Transition of Leadership
Chisoo Lyons, with extensive experience in leveraging data to drive organizational, societal, and personal advancement, joined WiDS in 2023 as Chief Programs Director. She now takes the helm from Professor Margot Gerritsen, co-founder and pivotal leader of the organization since its inception in 2015. Gerritsen transitions to an advisory role, continuing her impactful work as a committee member and spokesperson.
Lyons holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from the University of California, Berkeley, grounding her leadership in solid academic achievement. Before her engagement with WiDS, Lyons distinguished herself during her tenure at FICO, an analytics and decision management company, where her strategic leadership spurred innovation, business growth, and expanded access to services for underrepresented communities. An inventor with patents in strategic and financial optimization methodologies, Lyons’ expertise is both broad and deep.
Looking Ahead for WiDS
In her role as Executive Director, Lyons is poised to steer WiDS toward achieving its ambitious “30 x 30” mission — aiming for 30% representation of women in data science education, innovation, and leadership by 2030. This goal aligns with the critical mass theory, that 30% is the threshold for creating an inclusive culture, leading to equal participation. Achieving this balance is vital for reducing biases in data-driven decisions that impact crucial sectors such as education, healthcare, safety, security, and economic prosperity.
Lyons’ comprehensive experience, coupled with her visionary leadership and commitment to inclusivity, marks her as the ideal figure to propel WiDS into its next chapter, inspiring women globally in the field of data science.
WiDS is enthusiastic about Lyons’ appointment and her potential to elevate the organization’s impact, furthering its mission to empower women in data science.
